What is a supercar?

A supercar is a road car built around performance to a degree that compromises almost everything else. It is usually a two-seater, usually mid-engined, usually made in small numbers, and it is shaped primarily by what the air does to it at speed rather than by how much luggage it can carry.

The useful way to think about it is by what has been given up. A fast sedan adds performance to a car that still does the ordinary jobs. A supercar subtracts the ordinary jobs to get the performance. That is the actual dividing line, and it explains why a car with modest power can be a supercar while a far more powerful family car is not.

Is there an official definition of a supercar?

No, and this matters more than it sounds. In motorsport there is a real authority doing real classification: Britannica notes that governing bodies, the most notable being the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, divide racing cars into classes and subclasses and supervise competitions. Nothing equivalent exists for road cars.

"Supercar" is a press and market term. It emerged from motoring journalism and stuck because it was useful, not because anyone defined it. Why are most supercars mid-engined or rear-engined?

Because engine placement is the single biggest lever on how a car behaves. Where did the supercar come from?

From racing, by a fairly direct route. Competition arrived almost immediately after the gasoline engine did. Britannica dates the first organized automobile competition to 1894, a reliability test from Paris to Rouen won at an average speed of 16.4 kph, and the first true race to 1895, from Paris to Bordeaux and back, won at 24.15 kph.

Speeds climbed fast. By 1900 racers had passed 80 kph, and open-road racing became dangerous enough that authorities stopped the 1903 Paris to Madrid race at Bordeaux after a string of accidents. The response was the closed circuit and the manufacturer team. The requirement that a fast car also survive. The 24 Hours of Le Mans has run near Le Mans, France, since 1923, and since 1928 the winner has been the car that covers the greatest distance in a 24-hour period, on a circuit of roughly 8.5 miles. It remains one of the eight rounds of the FIA World Endurance Championship.

That format changes what engineering gets rewarded. A sprint race rewards peak output; a day-long race rewards cooling, brakes, fuel efficiency, and structures that do not crack. Do supercars have to be impractical?

Less than they used to. Modern versions have quietly absorbed adjustable suspension, nose lift systems, usable transmissions and real climate control, which is why a current car is far easier to live with than one from the 1970s or 1980s.
