About the design

The scene is painted in the manner of an eighteenth century oil portrait. Washington sits at a heavy mahogany table in a dark paneled room, white powdered hair, a navy coat over a buff waistcoat with brass buttons. He threads a length of magnetic tape onto a large silver reel to reel machine, its two reels catching the light. A candle burns in a brass holder at his left, and a splicing block, a coil of tape, handwritten letters and a quill in its inkwell fill the rest of the table.
